There are many outstanding questions that have stumped the masses over time. Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Where do babies come from? Do flies spin before landing on the ceiling or do they fly upside down? Where’s the beef? Will the Cubs ever win another World Series? Will that be paper or plastic? It has taken many brilliant minds to figure out the answers to most of these questions. But the last two questions still seem to confound many people. Your grocery bill increases weekly, but all you hear is that there is no food to eat. Everyone needs new clothes, yet, your closets and dressers are full. You need new carpet, but you can’t see the carpet you do have because of all the “crap” laying around the house. You need new bikes, but your garage and yard are littered with bikes. We need new cell phones with the latest features. The list is endless. How is it we need so much, when in reality we have so much? The headline in the Indianapolis Star read, “I Love My Country. I Love My Family More.” Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels had decided not to run to become our next U.S. President. Despite having the talent and desire for the job, Governor Daniels new a Presidential campaign was not in the best interest of his family. What would your decision have been? The United States has invested a lot of time, money, resources and lives to battle terrorism. We have had major successes. We have made tremendous inroads in eliminating various sectors of terrorism. But, the looming shadow of bin Laden has always dulled the joy of victory. His presence has been a weight on our shoulders. True victory was never possible with the world’s leading terrorist still free. Now I am in no way suggesting that the fight against terrorism is over, or that it can ever be totally eliminated. I am also not suggesting that the death of bin Laden in any way makes up for the tremendous loss suffered by the United States, the victims of 911 or the victim’s families and friends. But the elimination of bin Laden does allow us to momentarily enjoy a victory. It does allow us to eliminate a burden that has been weighing on our shoulders and stifling us. I love watching This Old House. However, the key phrase is watching. Because when it comes to actually working on projects around “My Old House”, I am useless. I lack the skills and the ability to apply the knowledge I gain. Thus, I quickly become impatient and overwhelmed. The result, I often ignore the problem, so a small maintenance can turn into a larger repair. Maybe, your home isn’t crumbling into disrepair.
