The headline in the Indianapolis Star read, “I Love My Country. I Love My Family More.” Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels had decided not to run to become our next U.S. President. Despite having the talent and desire for the job, Governor Daniels new a Presidential campaign was not in the best interest of his family. What would your decision have been?

Former Major League Pitcher Bill Sampen ( www.sampshackshack.com )faced a similar decision in 1994. During his fifth year of pitching in the Major Leagues, Bill decided it was time to retire and come home and raise his family. I remember reading the article and I thought Bill was crazy. I thought he was throwing a dream away. What I didn’t know was that being a great father was a much larger dream for Bill.

Most of us may never have to decide between our dream and our family. But all of us at one time or another will need to make tough decisions.

What tough decision or issue are you or are you not facing right now? Your issue may be about a job change, opening or closing a business, getting out of debt, filing for bankruptcy, college expenses, or retirement to name just a few. But are you facing it? If not, then why not? What are you gaining by ignoring the problem?

Let’s try a simple exercise. Take out a piece of paper. Write down the biggest issue that you are facing right now. Now answer the following questions:

  • How long has this been an issue?
  • What have you tried to fix the problem?
  • Is embarrassment keeping you from addressing the problem?
  • What happens if you don’t fix it?
  • How much is this costing you?
  • What are you not doing that you should be doing?
  • Other than you, who is this negatively impacting”
  • Knowing that, how does this make you feel?
  • How committed are you to fixing the problem?

If you are committed to fixing the problem then follow these 5 steps:

1. Gather the necessary information to aid your decision.
2. Seek wise counsel.
3. Make your decision.
4. Develop a game plan.
5. Just do it.
